Estrogen is the primary hormone responsible for reproductive health in women. Although, it does much more than that! Estrogen plays an important role in bone health, heart health, brain health, metabolism, and mood. The key to estrogen (and all other hormones) is balance. Often when estrogen becomes out of balance, women KNOW it! Estrogen levels naturally decline as we age and significantly decrease during and after menopause. Estrogen levels can also be low during the postpartum period, especially if breastfeeding. Otherwise, there are several other reasons premenopausal women can have low estrogen (e.g., hypothyroidism, use of oral hormonal contraceptives). Women with estrogen deficiency may struggle with stubborn weight gain, hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, vaginal dryness, sleep disturbances, brain fog, headache, low libido, vaginal infections, UTIs, and irregular, short, light, or absent periods.
It is common for sage hormone types to feel a loss of joy, connection, and interest in life. Something just feels “off”.
