  • It has been reported as high as 90% of menstruating women experience painful periods.

  • About 10 percent of women have difficulty getting pregnant or staying pregnant, with PCOS being the leading cause of female infertility.

  • PCOS affects as many as 12 percent of women of reproductive age and is currently on the rise.

  • Women with PCOS have double the risk of a future cardiovascular event, like a heart attack or stroke. More than half of women with PCOS develop type 2 diabetes by age 40. PCOS also increases the risk of gestational diabetes (diabetes when pregnant) which increases the baby’s chance of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

  • The health of a woman during pregnancy significantly influences the child’s health later in life. Babies who are born via C-section are more likely to develop obesity, allergies, asthma, autism, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and type 1 diabetes.

  • About 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.

  • About 85% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer.

Women are in desperate need of better care

It’s time to take action!

  • 58% of women that are prescribed birth control use it for reasons other than pregnancy prevention such as irregular periods, acne, mood swings, heavy bleeding, etc.

  • Oftentimes women who stop using birth control will have a reoccurrence of previous hormonal issues because the underlying cause was never addressed. Some women may even develop new symptoms post-pill use.

  • A majority of women are not properly informed of all the potential side effects of birth control.

  • Some of the lesser discussed side effects of oral birth control include nutrient depletion, lowered libido, vaginal yeast infections, potential digestive disturbances, reduced thyroid function, higher stress hormone levels, possible worsening of insulin resistance in those with PCOS, and depression.

  • One of the major reasons for discontinuing the pill has been mood-related side effects. “All forms of hormonal contraception were associated with an increased risk of developing depression, with higher risks associated with the progesterone-only forms, including the IUD. Women who used the combined birth control pill, a mix of estrogen and progestin, were 23 percent more likely to be prescribed anti-depressants than nonusers, and progestin-only pills raised the likelihood by 34 percent. With the patch, antidepressant use doubled; risk increased by 60 percent for vaginal rings and 40 percent for hormonal IUDs."

  • Although birth control may be a useful tool for some women, it should not be a blanket solution for every women’s health problem.

COMPREHENSIVE HORMONE TESTING

The only way to truly know what your hormones are doing is by testing. I cannot tell you the number of times I’ve had a client come in thinking they have an issue with one specific hormone, we go ahead with testing, and it’s a different hormone entirely causing the problem. No doctor would ever give thyroid medication without first testing thyroid levels. No doctor would ever give diabetes medication without first testing blood sugar levels. So why wouldn’t your doctor check your hormone levels before addressing a hormonal problem? You can actually end up doing more harm than good by using “hormone balancing” supplements without testing hormones first.

At Whole Health NWC, we make sure you receive proper care. So if your symptoms point toward a hormonal imbalance, we test your hormones. This is often done through a comprehensive urine test called the DUTCH test. The DUTCH test measures female hormones (progesterone, testosterone, estrogens), adrenal health (cortisol, cortisone, DHEA-S), nutritional status (vitamin B12, vitamin B6, biotin), neurotransmitters (epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine, melatonin), oxidative stress, and a few other health markers. If you are interested in running this hormone panel, be sure to check out our Hormone Rebalance Package.

THE HORMONE REBALANCE PACKAGE INCLUDES:

Initial 60 minute visit to discuss your health goals and symptoms in more detail

1 DUTCH Complete at-home urine hormone test

FAQs ABOUT THE DUTCH TEST

  • This depends on the form of birth control you are on.

Hormone testing is NOT recommended for those using the birth control pill, ring, or implants. These forms of birth control suppress estrogen and progesterone levels in effort to stop ovulation and prevent pregnancy. Hormone testing is not going to be useful if measured while on these forms of birth control.

If using the Mirena IUD (or other hormonal IUD), then testing will depend on if you are still ovulating. Hormonal IUDs can suppress ovulation but not always.

Copper IUDs shouldn’t affect hormone levels. Therefore, it’s typically okay to run the DUTCH test while using this form of birth control.

  • If you were previously on hormonal birth control (pill, injection, IUD, implant, patch, etc), it’s typically recommended to wait at least 3 full menstrual cycles until testing hormones. This is because hormones are suppressed while on birth control and it can take time for the body to adjust to these new changes in hormone levels.

  • The DUTCH test can be a great way to measure sex hormones and monitor symptoms during perimenopause or in the early stages of menopause.

Hormone testing can be an effective way to assess estrogen and other hormones that have long-term health effects on the brain and body. DUTCH testing measures estrogen levels and shows you how well you’re metabolizing estrogen, which can be helpful in lowering the risk of hormone-sensitive cancers.

The DUTCH test also looks at cortisol patterns, which often becomes disrupted during this transitional period.

  • This test is not helpful for those on Tamoxifen or Anastrozole therapy. Both medications significantly lower your body’s estrogen levels, which makes testing estrogen unnecessary.

Even if your estrogen levels did come back abnormal, most natural therapies to support healthy estrogen levels interact with these medications.

There are, however, many other ways to support women on these estrogen-lowering medications without hormone testing.

  • No. An initial visit is required before Dr. Poy orders the DUTCH test for you.

  • If there are abnormal findings on the DUTCH test, retesting is typically recommended 3-6 months after initiating your personalized hormone rebalancing protocol.

If your DUTCH test comes back completely normal, retesting can be done every few years or if new hormone-related symptoms arise.

  • The DUTCH Complete is a 24 hour urine test. Once you have your initial visit, the test will be shipped directly to you, to complete at home.

Once you receive the test, you will complete it exactly 1 week after ovulation. Further guidance will be provided on how to track ovulation or you’ll be given other options for collection if you do not ovulate.

After you complete the 4 required urine samples, you will need to let the samples dry for 24 hours. Once dry, you’ll return the samples to the lab. Shipping is free.

Test results are then sent directly to Dr. Poy 7-10 days from when the lab receives the samples. An extended return visit will be scheduled once results are in to review the results in detail. You will then receive a targeted plan to address any imbalances seen on the results.

  • There are pros and cons to each type of hormone test. Oftentimes both serum and urine hormone tests are recommended for a comprehensive evaluation.

It is important to note that the DUTCH test is nondiagnostic and does not measure certain hormones like thyroid, LH, FSH, prolactin, or insulin.
