Foods for Hormone Health

The foods you eat are either helping to produce and maintain healthy hormonal balance OR causing imbalances and wreaking havoc on your health.

Foods that help balance hormones:

⊹ Avocados are a great source of healthy fats which serve as the building block of hormones. Avocados also contain fiber, magnesium, B vitamins, vitamin E, and glutathione.

⊹ Extra-virgin olive oil contains monounsaturated fats which help keep cell membranes healthy and allow hormones to work more efficiently.

⊹ Berries contain lots of fiber, antioxidants, and vitamin C. Vitamin C is needed for hormone degradation via the MAO enzyme. Vitamin C also plays an important part in cortisol regulation.

⊹ Carrots contain insoluble fiber which help bind excess hormones in the digestive tract, preventing their reabsorption.

⊹ Broccoli contains indole-3-carbinol (I3C) which breaks down into diindolylmethane (DIM). This helps to clear out estrogens and lower risk of breast cancer.

⊹ Flaxseed contains phytoestrogens compounds which can help improve estrogen dominance. Flaxseeds are also a great source of omega-3s and fiber.

Foods that cause hormonal imbalance:

⊹ Excess sugar and refined carbs lead to blood sugar spikes and insulin resistance. Insulin greatly impacts all your other hormones.

⊹ Fried foods and vegetable oils are highly inflammatory. They contain unhealthy fats and typically lead to weight gain, which increases insulin and estrogen levels.

⊹ Caffeine is fine in moderation for most people. Although drinking caffeine, especially on an empty stomach, can increase epinephrine release, spike blood sugar, and increase cortisol levels.

⊹ Alcohol is considered an endocrine disruptor because it interferes with the production and use of hormones. Alcohol also damages the gut microbiome, increases histamine levels, and slows liver detox.
